Your move: lean on context. You're listening to someone booking accommodation and you hear "...oo-king for June." Your brain should complete it as "booking" because that's what makes sense in a hotel call. The noise strips out some audio data, but context fills the gap.
The receptionist answers your question while someone else speaks up in the background. You hear fragments of both conversations layered on top of each other. This happens constantly in real Section 1 recordings because receptionists actually work in busy offices.
Your move: focus on the main voice. The person talking directly into the phone is usually louder than background chatter. Train yourself to filter the quieter voice and follow the main conversation thread. IELTS expects you to do this.
Less common, but it happens. A word completely disappears in a dropout. The audio crackles over a syllable. You literally cannot hear what was said because the sound file has a problem or the speaker's mic volume dropped.
Your move: educated guessing. If you hear "M... ith" when the question asks for a name, you have enough phonetic information to guess "Smith" or "Griffith." This isn't cheating. It's logical deduction when the audio itself fails you.
The best way to improve listening comprehension with noise interference is to identify exactly where you struggle. Run through this checklist before each practice session to diagnose your weak spots and track improvement over time.

Question: "What is the customer's surname?"

With noise management: You catch "...ardson" through traffic. You recognize "-ardson" as a common surname ending. You use context (the speaker's nationality, what they're booking) to fill in "Richardson." You write it confidently. That's what advanced listeners do.
Question: "What is the booking date?"
Without strategy: Receptionist says "That's the twenty-third of August" but overlapping background speech blocks "twenty" and "third." You hear fragments and panic. You write "23 of August" but you're guessing. You might get it wrong. You second-guess yourself.
With strategy: You hear "...ty-...rd of August" with chatter underneath. You already know from earlier in the call that this is a mid-month conference. Your brain fills in "twenty-third of August" based on what makes sense. You write "23/8" confidently.
Question: "What is the phone number?"
Without a backup plan: Speaker says "It's oh-two-eight-five-four-double-three-nine-one" but crackling drops the "double-three." You hear "...three-...ne-one" and freeze. You write nothing because you're scared of getting a digit wrong. The answer needs all 10 digits.
With phonetic deduction: You capture "02854." You know the speaker said "double-three," which is how people typically say repeating digits. You write "02854339-1" with confidence. Not perfect, but you used what you heard plus knowledge of phone number structure.
Overlapping speech is the trickiest noise type. It's not random static. It's actual words fighting with the words you need to hear. Your brain has to perform selective attention, which is a trainable skill.
Here's the drill: find a recording with overlapping speech. Play it once and track only the main speaker's voice. Ignore the background chatter. Repeat five times. Your brain's attention system strengthens with repetition, just like a muscle does.
The neuroscience is straightforward. Your prefrontal cortex manages attention. When you practice selective listening repeatedly, that brain region becomes more efficient at filtering noise and amplifying your target sound. You're literally rewiring your auditory processing. Progressive difficulty over five weeks: Week 1, clean audio, perfect scores. Week 2, light ambient noise layered in. Week 3, add overlapping speech. Week 4, occasional technical dropouts. Week 5, real test audio feels manageable because you've trained in worse conditions. This is what high-band scorers do. They don't rely on single-pass practice. Here's something that changes everything: IELTS recordings are designed so that all critical information is audible even with background noise. Test writers account for this. The name, date, phone number, booking detail gets repeated, emphasized, or placed at a clear moment in the conversation.

If you're missing answers because of noise, it's rarely because the noise made it literally impossible. It's usually because you lost focus at the wrong moment or didn't recognize when key information was being delivered. The noise pulled your attention away, not blocked it entirely.
Learn to notice when speakers deliver crucial information. In a booking call, when does the receptionist confirm your name. Usually right at the start or end when they're most articulate. When do they state the price. Usually slowly and clearly. When does the date come up. Often repeated. Notice these patterns and you'll catch answers even when noise tries to hide them.
Knowing about noise management is different from using it under pressure. Here's what you do this week.
Pick one Section 1 recording you've already done. Listen to it again, but this time layer background noise underneath using Audacity or a similar tool. Make it 30% louder than your first attempt. Answer the questions while the noise plays. Don't pause. Don't rewind. Do it once, then check your answers.
You'll probably miss 3-5 more answers than you did on clean audio. That's normal. That's the gap you're training to close. Now do the same recording again tomorrow with slightly less added noise. Then again the next day with even less. Your ear adapts faster than you think.
