Stacked bar charts. You're reading the total height, not individual segments. If a bar shows 100 total with one segment reaching 60, that segment is 60, not 100. Students often read the top of the entire bar and think that's the individual value. Trace down. Find where each segment actually ends.
Pie charts with percentages. Every slice must add to 100%. If one slice is labeled 35% and another 40%, they account for 75%. The remaining slices share 25%. Write out the percentages. Add them. Verify they total correctly.
Dual-axis graphs. Left side shows one unit (temperature in Celsius). Right side shows another (rainfall in millimeters). You mix them up. You say "temperature was 500" when the chart shows 25 degrees on the left axis and 500mm on the right axis. Match each line to its corresponding axis before writing.
Time-based charts with irregular intervals. The x-axis doesn't have equal spacing. 2010, 2015, 2020, 2023. These aren't evenly spaced. You describe change "year by year" when the data only shows five-year intervals. Adjust your language. Say "between 2010 and 2015" instead of guessing what happened in the middle years.

Step 2: Calculate the difference or percentage change. Q3 = 45. Q4 = 72. Difference = 27. Percentage change = (27/45) × 100 = 60%. Only now write "Q4 sales were 60% higher than Q3."
Weak: "Male participation increased significantly more than female participation throughout the period."
Accurate: "Male participation grew from 60% to 85%, a 25 percentage point increase, while female participation rose from 50% to 65%, a 15 percentage point increase. Thus, male participation increased by roughly 10 percentage points more than female participation."
The second response is longer but stronger. It's grounded in actual numbers from the chart. An examiner can verify it. The first response is empty talk.
Sometimes you'll write something that's technically accurate from the chart but contextually nonsensical. This is your red flag.
Example: A chart shows teenage unemployment rates. You read the data and write, "Teenage unemployment peaked at 2% in 2015." You read that correctly from the chart. But contextually, that feels suspiciously low. You know unemployment is typically higher. This doesn't pass the smell test. Go back to the chart. Did you misread the scale? Is it in tenths? Does the peak actually read 20%?
Context checking saves you. If a statistic feels wrong, verify it again.
This isn't about general knowledge trivia. It's about sanity checks. Death rates don't go to 80%. Temperature doesn't reach 100 Celsius in a temperate climate. If your reading produces an absurd number, you've likely misread it.
Scale errors are the most common mistake we see. A student reads "5" on the y-axis and writes "5 million" when the axis label says "Millions" and the scale shows intervals of 10, meaning it's actually 50 million.
The fix is mechanical. Before writing any number, say it out loud in your head with the units. "The axis is labeled 'Revenue in thousands.' The point is at 5. So I'm reading 5 thousands, which is 5,000 dollars." Write it down.
For graphs with unlabeled intervals, count the gridlines. Don't assume. If the y-axis shows 0 to 100 with 10 visible gridlines, each interval is 10. The point falls between the 3rd and 4th line? It's between 30 and 40.
Mark these numbers directly on the chart with your pen. Make small notes. This 30-second process prevents 70% of scale errors.
Examiners notice when you confuse these. Get it wrong and you look careless.
If unemployment goes from 40% to 55%, the change is 15 percentage points. The percentage increase is (15/40) × 100 = 37.5%.
Use "percentage point" when describing changes between percentages. Use "percent" or "%" when describing proportional growth. This distinction shows precision.
Weak: "Female participation increased by 15%." (Unclear: is this 15 percentage points or a 15% relative increase?)
Accurate: "Female participation rose from 50% to 65%, an increase of 15 percentage points."
A single factual error doesn't automatically drop you a full band. However, it weakens your Task Response score. If you make three to five errors across your response, examiners typically downgrade you by 0.5 to 1 full band.
At Band 7, multiple errors push you to Band 6. The cumulative damage is real. One error feels forgivable. Three errors suggest you can't read carefully, which is a fundamental Task 1 skill.
