IELTS examiners don't just grade you on how well you write. They grade you on whether you get the data right. That falls under Task Response, which accounts for up to 25% of your Writing score. Misrepresent the numbers, even slightly, and you're telling the examiner you either can't read a graph or don't care about precision. Neither helps your score. You've got 20 minutes. 150 words minimum. You're juggling complex sentence structures, trying to impress with vocabulary. Then you glance at the bar chart, think you see the pattern, and start writing.
That's where it falls apart. You're not reading exact values. You're estimating.
Estimating works fine in conversation. It doesn't work in IELTS. The rubric specifically requires you to address the question with accurate reference to the data. If you claim a figure increased by "around 50%" when it actually increased by 38%, that's a Task Response penalty. Your sentence structures can be flawless. Your grammar can be pristine. But get the numbers wrong and you lose points.
Weak: "The number of cars sold rose significantly throughout the decade, with increases across all regions."
Safe, yes. But vague. The examiner can't verify anything.
Good: "Car sales in the North increased from 45,000 units in 2015 to 67,000 in 2020, representing a 49% rise."
Specific. Verifiable. The examiner knows you actually read the graph. This is Band 7 thinking.
A line graph shows internet usage from 2000 to 2020. The y-axis reads 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 (in millions). The line goes from the 10 mark to the 35 mark. You think: "That's a 25 million increase."
But stop. Check the axis label. Does it say "millions of users" or "millions of dollars"? Is it counting all users or just adults? "Millions of active users aged 18+" means something completely different from "total internet subscribers." One label change, one completely different analysis.
Quick tip: Before you write anything, spend 30 seconds just reading the title, axis labels, and key. You'll catch 80% of accuracy errors right there.
A table shows employment rates for 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020. It went from 62% in 1990 to 71% in 2020. You write: "Employment rose from 62% to 71%." Correct so far.
Then you say: "This represents a 9% increase." Here's where it gets tricky. It's a 9 percentage point increase. But it's actually a 14.5% relative increase (because you're growing from a lower base). For IELTS, just stick with percentage points or use the before-and-after figures and let them speak for themselves.
Weak: "The percentage of households with internet access increased by 35% between 2010 and 2020."
If the graph actually shows a rise from 60% to 80%, that's 20 percentage points. Not 35%. A mistake like this makes you look careless.
Good: "Internet access among households rose from 60% in 2010 to 80% in 2020, an increase of 20 percentage points."
A pie chart shows market share. France holds 23.7%, Germany holds 31.2%, Spain holds 18.4%. You round in your head: "France had about 25%, Germany about 30%, Spain about 20%."
You've now misrepresented all three. The actual values are sitting right there on the chart. Use them. If you must round, round down instead of up. Better yet: just report what you see.
The graph shows CO2 emissions (in metric tons) from 1990 to 2020 for three countries.
Weak: "All three countries experienced significant growth in emissions. Country A showed the biggest increase, growing substantially over the 30-year period, while Country B and C also rose considerably."
This is so vague it's useless. No numbers. No specifics. The examiner can't verify anything, and an IELTS essay checker would flag this as lacking data reference.
Good: "Country A's emissions increased from 2.1 to 5.8 metric tons, representing a rise of 176%. Country B grew more modestly, from 1.5 to 3.2 metric tons (113%), while Country C remained relatively flat, increasing from 0.9 to 1.1 metric tons (22%)."
Specific. Accurate. Verifiable. This is the difference between Band 5 and Band 7.
A bar chart compares annual revenue for three tech companies in 2015 and 2020.
Weak: "Company X made more money than Company Y, and Company Z also grew. The changes were noticeable, with some companies doing better than others."
Good: "Company X's revenue doubled from $8 billion in 2015 to $16 billion in 2020. Company Y increased from $5 billion to $11 billion, while Company Z grew from $3 billion to $7 billion. By 2020, Company X remained the market leader, followed by Company Y and Company Z."
Exact figures. Comparison. Conclusion based on data. That's strong Task Response.
A table shows mobile phone usage (in hours per week) across age groups in 2010 and 2020.
Weak: "Younger people used mobile phones more than older people in both years. Usage increased overall, showing changing habits."
Good: "In 2010, 16-25 year-olds used mobile phones for 8 hours per week, increasing to 24 hours by 2020. For ages 26-40, usage rose from 4 hours to 14 hours. The 41+ age group showed the smallest increase, from 2 hours to 6 hours, suggesting younger demographics adopted mobile technology most rapidly."
Notice this doesn't just report numbers. It interprets them. This is how you move from Band 6 to Band 7. You show you understand what the data actually means.
An IELTS writing checker can flag vague language and catch some numerical errors, but it won't catch context-dependent mistakes. A checker might miss that you rounded 23.7% to "24%" when the exact figure was visible in the table. You still need to verify your numbers manually against the source data. Use the checker to identify weak claims first, then trace them back to the graph yourself.
You've finished writing. You've got 2 minutes left. Do this.
This takes 90 seconds. It'll catch most errors before they cost you points.
Some graphs are messy. The line doesn't land exactly on a grid line. The bar is between two marks. What do you do?
If a value is clearly between, say, 42 and 48, you can write "approximately 45." That's honest. But if the exact value is labeled on the graph (which it usually is in tables), use it. Never round a number that's explicitly given.
Also, don't say "nearly," "almost," or "roughly" before every number. Use these phrases sparingly, and only when the graph is genuinely ambiguous. Overuse signals uncertainty and costs you band points in Task Response.
Rule of thumb: If the graph shows exact values (labeled table), copy them. If it's a visual chart (bar or line), estimate to the nearest whole number. Never guess between unlabeled marks.
Here's a common trap. You learn to be accurate, so you write sentences that sound like a spreadsheet: "In 2015, the figure was 32. In 2016, the figure was 41. In 2017, the figure was 55."
Technically accurate. Also tedious. And boring writing costs you points in Lexical Resource and Coherence and Cohesion.
Weak: "In 2015, renewable energy was 12%. In 2016, it was 15%. In 2017, it was 19%. In 2018, it was 24%."
Good: "Renewable energy adoption accelerated sharply, rising from 12% in 2015 to 24% by 2018, with particularly steep growth between 2017 and 2018."
Same data. Much better impact. You're combining accuracy with actual writing skill. That's Band 7.
Line graphs: Watch the y-axis scale carefully. A tiny gap between lines doesn't mean a small difference if the scale is compressed. Also watch for lines crossing. Make absolutely sure you know which line is which before claiming one "overtakes" another.
Bar charts: Horizontal and vertical bars can trick you if you're moving fast. Double-check which bars you're comparing. Also verify whether the bars are stacked (they add up) or grouped (they're separate). A stacked bar chart requires completely different analysis than grouped bars.
Pie charts: The whole is always 100%. If your percentages add up to 101% or 99%, you made a mistake. Also, pie charts come with keys or legends. Make sure you're matching the right slice to the right label.
Tables: These are deceptively easy to misread because there's so much data crammed in. Read column headers and row labels carefully. A table showing "thousands of units" versus "units" can throw your entire analysis off by a factor of 1,000.
Process diagrams: These usually don't involve numbers, so accuracy means describing the sequence correctly. Don't add steps that aren't there. Don't skip steps. Follow the arrows.
Students who get this right don't suddenly become accurate on exam day. They practice during preparation. Every practice task, treat it like a real exam. Read the data multiple times before writing. Check your numbers before you finish. Get feedback on whether your claims actually match the graph.
