and explain and explain why this book had such a great impact on you.

Model Answer

Well, the book I'd like to talk about is 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho. I actually read it for the first time when I was in my final year of university, so that was about four or five years ago. A close friend recommended it to me during a period when I was feeling quite lost about what to do after graduation. To be honest, the story itself is quite simple on the surface. It follows a young shepherd named Santiago who has a recurring dream about finding treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. He decides to leave his comfortable life and travel across North Africa to pursue this dream. Along the way, he meets various characters who teach him important life lessons about following your heart and recognising the signs that the universe places in your path. What I mean is, it's really a story about the journey being more important than the destination. I'd say the reason this book impacted me so deeply is that I was at a crossroads in my own life when I read it. I was torn between taking a safe, predictable job and pursuing something I was truly passionate about. The protagonist's courage to leave everything behind and chase his dream really resonated with me. Actually, after finishing the book, I made the decision to follow my own passion, and I haven't looked back since. It taught me that sometimes you have to take risks to discover what you're truly capable of. I still reread certain passages whenever I need a bit of motivation.

Speaking Tips

When discussing books, avoid simply retelling the plot. Focus more on your personal connection and emotional response. Examiners are looking for your ability to reflect and express opinions, so spending more time on 'why it impacted you' will score higher than a detailed plot summary.
