Bar Chart

How to Write IELTS Task 1 Bar Chart Essays

Bar charts display data using rectangular bars to compare quantities across different categories or time periods. When writing about bar charts, your goal is to identify and describe the most significant comparisons and trends rather than listing every individual bar. A strong response groups the data logically and highlights key differences and similarities.

Model Answer

The bar chart compares the proportion of adults using the internet in five countries across two years, 2005 and 2015. Overall, internet usage rose in all five nations over the decade, with Sweden and the United States recording the highest rates in both years. Nigeria had the lowest usage throughout the period. In 2005, Sweden led with approximately 80% of adults online, followed closely by the United States at 68%. South Korea and Brazil recorded figures of around 65% and 20%, respectively, while Nigeria stood at just 5%. By 2015, Sweden had reached roughly 95%, maintaining its leading position. The United States and South Korea both climbed to approximately 88% and 90%, respectively, narrowing the gap with Sweden considerably. Brazil saw a significant increase to around 58%, whereas Nigeria, despite tripling its figure to 15%, remained well behind the other countries. The data indicates that although internet adoption grew universally, substantial disparities between developed and developing nations persisted.
