Common Mistakes That Keep You Below Band 5.5

Not answering all parts of the question

How to fix it: Underline every part of the question prompt. Make sure each part gets at least one paragraph.

Weak: The question asks about advantages AND disadvantages, but the essay only discusses advantages.
Improved: Dedicate one body paragraph to advantages and another to disadvantages, even if your opinion favours one side.

No clear paragraph structure

How to fix it: Use a simple 4-paragraph structure: Introduction, Body 1, Body 2, Conclusion. Start each paragraph on a new line with a clear topic sentence.

Weak: Writing the entire essay as one or two large blocks of text.
Improved: Each body paragraph begins with a clear topic sentence: 'One significant advantage is...'

Repeating the same vocabulary

How to fix it: Learn 2–3 synonyms for common IELTS words: important → significant, crucial, essential.

Weak: Technology is important. It is important for education. It is also important for health.
Improved: Technology is significant in education and plays a crucial role in modern healthcare.

Very short essays (under 250 words)

How to fix it: Practice writing at least 260–280 words consistently. Time yourself: 40 minutes for Task 2.

Weak: Writing only 180–200 words, leaving ideas undeveloped.
Improved: Expand each body paragraph with a reason, an example, and a brief explanation.

Nowadays technology is very important. Many people use technology every day. Technology helps people in many ways. It is good for education and also for work. Some people think technology is bad but I think it is good because it helps us.

Band 5.5

Technology has become an essential part of modern life, particularly in the fields of education and employment. For instance, online learning platforms allow students to access courses from anywhere in the world. While some argue that excessive screen time is harmful, the benefits of technology in improving access to information are significant.

What changed: The Band 5.5 version uses topic sentences, provides a specific example, acknowledges the other side, and uses more varied vocabulary (essential, particularly, excessive, significant).
