What Examiners Expect at Band 5.5
- Task Response: Address the main parts of the task, though some parts may be more fully covered than others. Present a position but it may be unclear at times.
- Coherence Cohesion: Organise information with some logic. Use paragraphing but it may not always be logical. Use some cohesive devices, though they may be faulty or mechanical.
- Lexical Resource: Use a limited but adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Spelling and word formation errors occur but do not impede communication.
- Grammatical Range: Use a limited range of structures. Attempt complex sentences but these often have errors. Errors may cause some difficulty for the reader.
Common Mistakes That Keep You Below Band 5.5
Not answering all parts of the question
How to fix it: Underline every part of the question prompt. Make sure each part gets at least one paragraph.
No clear paragraph structure
How to fix it: Use a simple 4-paragraph structure: Introduction, Body 1, Body 2, Conclusion. Start each paragraph on a new line with a clear topic sentence.
Repeating the same vocabulary
How to fix it: Learn 2–3 synonyms for common IELTS words: important → significant, crucial, essential.
Very short essays (under 250 words)
How to fix it: Practice writing at least 260–280 words consistently. Time yourself: 40 minutes for Task 2.
