Weak: "The United Kingdom had the highest consumption at 18 million kilograms of coffee, while France consumed only 5 million kilograms."
Good: "The United Kingdom accounted for approximately 18 billion pounds in coffee sales, substantially higher than France, which recorded around 5 billion pounds."
The first version fails because you've invented a measurement unit the chart doesn't show. The second reads the axis correctly and sounds confident.
A line graph shows smartphone sales over 10 years. The line mostly goes up, so you write "Smartphone sales experienced consistent growth throughout the period." But the graph shows a dip from 2019 to 2020. Your statement contradicts the data. That's a misrepresentation.
Weak: "Sales consistently increased across the entire decade, rising from 50 million to 200 million units."
Good: "Sales climbed steadily from 50 million units in 2010 to a peak of 185 million in 2019, before declining slightly to 175 million in 2020. Growth resumed thereafter, reaching 200 million by 2025."
The strong version acknowledges the dip and keeps it honest. It doesn't hide from anomalies; it describes them accurately.
A pie chart shows market share: Tech 40%, Finance 30%, Retail 20%, Other 10%. You write "The Tech sector was three times larger than Retail." But 40% divided by 20% is exactly two times, not three. You've fabricated a statistic.
Weak: "The Technology sector was three times as large as Retail, commanding the vast majority of market dominance."
Good: "The Technology sector accounted for 40% of the market, twice the share of Retail at 20%, while Finance represented 30% and Other categories made up the remainder at 10%."
The good version is precise. It uses what's actually there, no embellishment.
You've got 20 minutes for Task 1. You can't reread the chart five times. But you need a system that catches graph writing factual mistakes before you write a single word.
Real talk: Spend 90 seconds reading the chart thoroughly. Spend 14 minutes writing. A single factual error can drop your Task Response mark by one band level. That's 15 minutes of potential higher scoring gone.

Corrected Response:
"The chart illustrates energy consumption across four sources. Coal represents the largest share at 45 million tonnes, followed closely by oil at 38 million tonnes and gas at 32 million tonnes. Together, oil and gas account for 70 million tonnes, exceeding coal's consumption. Renewables remain the smallest category at 15 million tonnes, representing approximately 13% of total consumption."
This version is factually accurate, descriptive, and supported by the data. No invented comparisons. No misread numbers. That's what Band 7 looks like.
Task 1 doesn't demand decimal precision for every single data point. The band descriptors reward you for appropriate selection of details, not for listing every number on the chart.
If a bar reaches 47.8 million and another reaches 45.3 million, you don't write "The first was 2.5 million higher." You write "The first was slightly higher" or "approximately 48 million compared to around 45 million." It's cleaner, more natural, and still accurate.
Pro tip: Use phrases like "approximately," "roughly," "just over," "just under," "around," and "nearly" to signal reasonable rounding. This shows you've read carefully without obsessing over decimal points.
Line Graphs: Students claim "consistent growth" when the line wobbles up and down. They miss downturns or plateaus. Always describe where the line moves, especially when it changes direction.
Bar Charts: The most common error is reading the scale wrong. A bar at the halfway point might represent 50, 500, or 5,000. Write down the scale before you start writing.
Pie Charts: Students invent percentages that don't match the labeled segments. You'll write "roughly one-third" when the chart shows 22%. Read the labels, not your gut.
Tables: Misalignment kills accuracy. You read row data but accidentally match it to the wrong column. Run your finger across and down at the same time to match data points correctly.
