Part 3 (Discussion) Environment

Individual Action on the Environment

Question

How can individuals contribute to solving environmental problems?

Model Answer

I believe that while governments and corporations bear the greatest responsibility for environmental protection, individuals can still make a meaningful difference through their daily choices. From my perspective, the most impactful step a person can take is to adopt more sustainable consumption habits — for example, reducing single-use plastics, choosing biodegradable products, and minimising food waste. On the other hand, some people argue that individual actions are insignificant compared to industrial pollution, and I understand that viewpoint. Having said that, I think there is a powerful ripple effect when millions of people change their behaviour simultaneously. Furthermore, individuals can contribute by supporting environmental policies and voting for leaders who prioritise green initiatives. Another often overlooked way to help is simply raising awareness within one's community — educating friends and family about environmental issues can multiply the impact many times over. I also think that embracing public transport or cycling instead of driving makes a tangible difference in reducing carbon emissions. Ultimately, solving environmental problems requires collective effort, but that collective effort starts with individual commitment.
