How to Write IELTS Task 1 Map Essays

Map questions present one or more maps of a location, typically showing changes over time or proposed developments. Your task is to describe the most significant changes, additions, and removals while using appropriate spatial language. Unlike data-driven charts, maps require you to compare visual layouts and describe physical transformations clearly and systematically.

Model Answer

The two maps illustrate how the town of Bridgeford was transformed over a twenty-year period from 2000 to 2020. Overall, the town underwent significant development, with several new facilities replacing older structures. The river running through the centre and the main road remained unchanged throughout. In the northern part of the town, the farmland that previously occupied a large area was converted into a residential housing estate by 2020. Adjacent to this, a new shopping centre was constructed where a row of small shops had stood. The school to the north-east was expanded, with an additional building added to its grounds. In the southern half, the most notable change was the demolition of the factory, which was replaced by a public park with a playground. The car park to the west of the factory was relocated to the eastern side of the new park. The hospital in the south-west corner remained in its original position, though a new car park was built in its vicinity. The post office was also retained in its original location.
