Does Globalisation Enhance or Erode National Identity?

IELTS Question

Some people think that the increasing business and cultural contact between countries brings many positive effects. Others say it causes the loss of national identities. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Band-9 Model Answer

Globalisation has been a driving force in shaping modern societies, leading to increased business and cultural exchanges between countries. While some argue that this trend fosters positive development, others contend that it results in the erosion of national identities. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my opinion. On one hand, proponents of globalisation argue that increased international interaction enriches societies. Business contacts between countries can lead to economic growth, as multinational corporations create jobs and stimulate innovation. Culturally, globalisation allows for the exchange of ideas and traditions, promoting mutual understanding and tolerance. For instance, the spread of international cuisine has not only diversified food choices but also fostered cultural appreciation. Thus, globalisation can be seen as a catalyst for progress and harmony among nations. Conversely, critics of globalisation claim that it threatens the uniqueness of national identities. As global brands and media dominate local markets, traditional customs and languages may be sidelined. This cultural homogenisation can lead to the loss of heritage and identity, as seen in many indigenous communities struggling to preserve their traditions. Furthermore, the widespread use of English as a global lingua franca often overshadows minority languages, potentially leading to their extinction. Therefore, while globalisation may offer economic benefits, it raises concerns about cultural preservation. In my opinion, the benefits of globalisation outweigh the drawbacks, provided that measures are taken to protect national identities. Governments and communities should actively promote cultural heritage through education and public policies. Encouraging bilingualism and celebrating local traditions can help maintain cultural diversity in a globalised world. Hence, while globalisation is an inevitable trend, it is possible to embrace its benefits while safeguarding national identities.
