IELTS Question
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to make important decisions in areas such as healthcare, criminal justice, and employment. Some people believe this leads to fairer outcomes, while others argue that it is dangerous to rely on machines for such decisions. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being integrated into decision-making processes in various sectors, including healthcare, criminal justice, and employment. While some argue that AI leads to more equitable outcomes, others contend that reliance on technology for critical decisions can be perilous. This essay will explore both perspectives before presenting a personal viewpoint.
Proponents of AI in decision-making argue that it can enhance fairness by eliminating human biases. For instance, in the hiring process, AI can be programmed to evaluate candidates based solely on qualifications and experience, disregarding factors such as ethnicity or gender, which might unconsciously influence human recruiters. Similarly, in healthcare, AI algorithms can analyze vast datasets to provide diagnoses that are not swayed by personal prejudices. These examples suggest that AI has the potential to promote objectivity and consistency, leading to fairer outcomes.
On the contrary, critics highlight the dangers of over-reliance on AI, particularly the risk of algorithmic bias. AI systems are trained on historical data, which may reflect existing societal biases. For example, if a criminal justice algorithm is trained on data from a biased legal system, it may perpetuate those biases in its decisions, such as predicting recidivism. Furthermore, AI lacks the ability to understand nuanced human contexts and emotions, which are often crucial in decision-making. This limitation raises concerns about the appropriateness of AI in areas requiring empathy and moral judgment.
In my opinion, while AI can undoubtedly contribute to fairer decision-making, it should not operate in isolation. Human oversight is essential to ensure that AI systems are used ethically and transparently. By combining AI's analytical capabilities with human judgment, we can mitigate risks and harness the benefits of technology to achieve fair and just outcomes.
